Cardcaptor Sakura, the magic girl series from acclaimed studio CLAMP, stunned audiences for a number of reasons when it was released in the late '90s: The strong female adventurer, the dangerous quests, the powerful friendships, and the cheerful humor. But one of Cardcaptor Sakura's defining features is undoubtedly the huge variety of outfits Sakura sports during her adventures. A series which clearly finds joy in depicting beautiful things, the creators found a way to dress their heroine up in almost every new chapter or episode.

Sakura's best friend, Tomoyo, is wealthy, extravagant, and loves nothing more than designing and creating special outfits for Sakura to wear during her missions. Raiding her mother's toy company for supplies to create new looks and useful gadgets, Tomoyo created most of Sakura's most memorable and adorable costumes. With countless outfits to choose from, we thought we'd rummage through Sakura's wardrobe and rank the 10 best costumes the Cardcaptor hero wears.

Updated By Amanda Bruce On June 1, 2020: As Sakura's stories have expanded with the manga and and anime Clear Card Arc, so has her wardrobe. Tomoyo hasn't lost her touch, updating some classic costumes as well as designing whole new ones. The list has been updated from its original publishing with even more of Sakura's best costumes.

15 Pastel Lotus Costume

Appearing in the fourth episode of the Clear Card Arc, this two-piece ensemble not only comes with matching shoes, but a matching hair clip. It's not as dramatic as a lot of Tomoyo's designs, but it's definitely more functional.

The loose-fitting ensemble allows Sakura to have a nice range of movement, which is important since in this episode, she captures the Action Card. It also allows her a nice break from her usual skirts since there's a pair of cropped pants with her loose top.

14 Red Snow Bunny Costume

From the original series, this particular costume has functionality in mind as well. Designed to make Sakura look like a rabbit, complete with ears on the hood, it's definitely a precursor to the frog costume Tomoyo designs in the later Clear Card Arc.

Not only does it have a hood to keep Sakura's ears warm, but it also comes with tights and weather-proof boots. It's the perfect outfit for her to wear while she's stuck in the cold, going after the Snow Card.

13 Pink Ribbon Dress

During the Clear Card Arc, Sakura doesn't head into battle to capture a card right away. Instead, it's in the second episode that she dons her first fight costume.

For long time fans of the franchise, this costume will definitely bring back some memories. It is, of course, in pink, which is one of the colors Sakura wears most often. The costume also, however, borrows some design details from her elementary school uniform. In the Clear Card Arc, Sakura and Tomoyo are in middle school and no longer wear the hats of their elementary uniform, which this design incorporates. It also features a similar design to Sakura's very first costume worn in the original series' opening credits.

12 Time Fairy Dress

Most kids, at some point, have likely been interested in fairies. That's part of the reason this particular costume is so appealing. It's one of Tomoyo's earliest designs for Sakura, so it's not the most functional of costumes. Tomoyo definitely learns more about how to make costumes functional farther down the line.

It does have the effect of truly making Sakura look "magical." Despite it not being the most functional, Sakura does still manage to get the job done.

11 The Zoo Ensemble

Technically speaking, this isn't one of Sakura's costumes. Tomoyo doesn't make it for her, but instead, Sakura puts together this outfit herself when going to spend the day at the zoo with some friends toward the end of the Clear Card Arc's first season. Since she ends up facing off against the Mirage Card while wearing it, however, it qualifies as a costume.

It's one of the few times Sakura battles to capture a card in the clothing she chooses. Normally, she wears clothing Tomoyo makes for her because she knows Tomoyo puts so much effort into the costumes. This time, she's not in particularly protective clothing, but she is in clothing she can move in with loose-fitting pants and a button-down shirt.

10 Little Alice Costume

Most of Sakura's outfits are adorned with bright pinks, so this blue dress is a refreshing and interesting addition to her wardrobe. Designed and made by Tomoyo, this fluffy, frilly pinafore dress appropriately harkens back to Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.

It's worn by Sakura in 'Sakura's Little Adventure,' which sees the magic girl heroine shrink to miniature size in a fantastical size-shifting quest to catch the Clow Card, The Little. CLAMP is notorious for alluding to Lewis Carroll's classic Wonderland books in many of its works, so it isn't surprising to see the studio's heroine dawn a traditional Alice-inspired look.

9 Catch You Catch Me

Perhaps one of Sakura's most iconic looks, she dons this adorable outfit in the opening of the entire first season of the anime and cover of the first volume of the manga. With her red dress, large red bow and beret, and puffy petticoat - it became immediately clear that Sakura was a sweet, fashionable, and strong magical girl.

The outfit is so popular that the sequel series, Cardcaptor Sakura: Clear Card, paid direct homage to it in its second episode, as Sakura put on her first Battle Outfit with a classic beret and petticoat, with the entire outfit lined with red and white ribbon detail.

8 Pink Hope Costume

This outfit might not be quite as flamboyant as some of Sakura's other options, but it is a welcome addition to her wardrobe. In Sakura's signature pinks, and with a bold golden trim, this costume is particularly memorable thanks to the long coattails.

Worn in Cardcaptor Sakura The Movie 2: The Sealed Card, Sakura needed a practical (but fashionable!) outfit to face off against the powerful Clow Card, The Nothing. Although stylish, this outfit suggests that Sakura is ready for battle. And to top it all off, it pairs with Syaoran's costume, a green version of the outfit - as if the couple couldn't get any cuter!

7 Pink Thunder Cat

This is arguably one of Sakura's most delightful costumes, designed to give her a cat-like appearance. The dark blacks of her frilly petticoat, stockings, and polo neck shirt contrast wonderfully with the bold pinks of her cute boots and apron-style dress. But what really makes this outfit special is the details: A large bow on her back, the belled collar, a long tail, and adorable cat ears.

Most significantly, Tomoyo designed this particular costume with Sakura's safety in mind. Made to capture the dangerous The Thunder card, the Pink Thunder Cat costume is made entirely of rubber, keeping Sakura cute, rather than electrocuted!

6 Pink and Black Star

Worn in the manga's climactic confrontation against Eriol Hiiragizawa at Tokyo Tower; the Final Pink and Black Star dress is a stunning addition to Sakura's collection. The softness of her trusted light pinks balances beautifully with the dark blacks of this outfit.

While still child-like, it is one of Sakura's more grown-up outfits, showing her maturity and ability to carry the responsibility of being entrusted with the Clow Cards. The star motif is particularly eye-catching, but also acknowledges the successes of Sakura's journey, matching the newly-transformed head of the Sealing Wand and the source of Sakura's own power: The stars.

5 Prince Costume

While this wasn't designed to be a Battle Outfit, it is undoubtedly one of Sakura's most popular outfits from both the manga and anime, and it's easy to see why. During an arts festival at her elementary school, Sakura and her friends put on a play of Sleeping Beauty in which Sakura plays the handsome prince and Syaoran plays the princess. To pull off her role, Sakura sports a costume which is both dashing and adorable.

With a large hat, long boots, puffy shorts, coattails, and a flowing cape; she looks truly heroic as a fairy tale prince. Her heroism is proven as she seals both The Light and The Dark cards in this outfit, moving her one step closer to her own quest's happily ever after.

4 Blue Water Jester

One of the most striking costumes, the Blue Water Jester outfit made an early appearance in Sakura's adventures, with the heroine donning it in the third episode of the anime and third chapter of the manga. While it has the fun appearance of a traditional court jester, with typical long hat, curled shoes, and yellow baubles, the purpose of this outfit was to help Sakura capture The Watery.

Tomoyo, therefore, designed this costume to be fun - and waterproof! This whimsical outfit became so beloved, Clear Card couldn't resist having their magic girl suit up in it once more, albeit with a more modern flair.

3 Froggy Raincoat

From the third episode of Clear Card, Sakura's Froggy Raincoat clearly embraces Tomoyo's design ability to mix fun with functional. As the pair are caught in a torrential downpour with evidence of a card nearby, Tomoyo whips up this wonderful raincoat for her friend. Made from a leaf-green and yellow vinyl material, the entire ensemble is made to resemble a frog.

While this motif is obvious when looking at the hood, the outfit encourages you to look closer and spot just how many hidden frogs are visible in the costume. Best of all, it's one of the few outfits Sakura wears that features the most desirable feature in any woman's outfit: pockets!

2 Platinum Star Dress

Cardcaptor Sakura Platinum Star Dress

From the third opening of the original anime series, Sakura's Platinum Star Dress is simply stunning and suits the character perfectly. Everything, from the frilly white dress to the puffy pink petticoat, the asymmetrical stockings with their long, flowing ribbons to her pretty pink hairbows makes this outfit uniquely special too, and instantly evocative of, Sakura.

The star motif returns again here, nodding to Sakura's successes in capturing all of the Clow Cards and passing the Final Judgement, earning the power to create Sakura Cards. She also occasionally sports light pink wings with this costume with a significant detail: CLAMP's signature swirl pattern can be seen where the feathers meet her back.

1 Clear Card Crystal Tutu

Returning for a new series almost 20 years after the original Cardcaptor Sakura anime aired, Clear Card marked an evolution for the character, perfectly embodied by the new outfit worn in the new opening. Sakura's gorgeous white, gold, and crystal-encrusted tutu dress is a stunning progression from her Platinum Star Dress.

An elegant design combining a crystal crown, gold-lined corset, and a large feathered skirt, it gives Sakura a regal appearance as she magically floats through the OP. It's exactly the kind of pretty style we've come to expect from Sakura and heralded this new era of Sakura in perfectly, with fans across the globe squealing with joy as the sweet, stylish magic girl returned to our screens in spectacular fashion.
